Portfolio

Common to all the systems we have delivered is the requirement for high reliability, and since much of our work is deployed on the production line, ease of use has been essential.

Cerres Portfolio SAP R3 Data Link

A systems integration project, providing a link between various foundry production planning systems located in Norway and a company-wide SAP R3 accounting and logistics system based in the UK.

Overview

The system transfers details of production orders and materials specifications from SAP to the appropriate foundry system. Production information, including details of completed order items, raw materials usage and quality control information, is returned from the foundry systems to SAP.

This interface was designed to provide a generic API so that different systems in various factories could use a common set of sub-routines to effect transfers of production information to and from the SAP PP-IP module.

This has allowed the system to be integrated into a variety of Oracle-based production systems across the company within a short time-scale and with minimum impact.

A number of surveillance and management applications have been implemented to provide support personnel with automatic e-mail notification of any change in the system status. This has significantly reduced the time required for systems support.

 

This implementation relied on one of our own products, Sentrix, to provide communications between the database and the operating system programs presented by the SAP interface to the PP-IP module. Sentrix also provides a complete logging and audit system enabling all communications between the systems to be tracked.

We also provided Oracle performance tuning expertise for SAP interface programs, which were implemented by third parties.

Originally Cerres was asked to implement a data link for just the Karmy smelter. We suggested that a common system could be developed and deployed at each foundry. The advantages of this approach were to minimise the costs of development, rollout and ongoing support at the four Norwegian smelters.

The implementation of a generic API using PL/SQL encapsulated complicated data transfer functions and low-level function calls. It also provided an easily-programmable interface, which could be integrated into the production systems at any of the foundries.

Implementation of a generic data link ensured a high level of data security and reliability. Comprehensive error-checking was implemented to ensure data consistency between SAP and the local foundry systems.


Scope

  • The system connects production systems in four aluminium smelters in western Norway with a SAP R3 system based in Portsmouth, England.
  • It is a truly mission-critical system, providing 24x7 availability.
